I personally bought a 3 user license of Norton 360 5.0 a few months ago and would like to share a few things that are not made clear by Norton.
First, the product advertises that it offers protection against keyloggers, command line execution, code injection, direct network access(alternate data streams), and monitors com control, program components, program launch, window messages, and active desktop changes; however, in actuality these services are ALL listed in the “Advance Events Monitoring” section of the Firewall settings and ARE NOT monitored in the default set up configuration.

In order to enable YOURSELF to monitor NOT NORTON, first you have to disable the “Automatic Program Control”; which I have found is prone to allow virtually every program requesting an outbound connection authorization, whether it uses another program(say Windows module) to access he internet or not. But if Automatic Program control is turned off so that the other services can be monitored by you, expect to deal with hundreds of annoying prompts to allow every packet entering and exciting access or not. Keylogger monitor monitoring should be standard, especially since Norton Web Safe claims to “ensure” that your personal data is not monitored by keyloggers. Apparently, this is not true at all.

Also the default configuration of the Anti-Virus of Norton 360 v. 5 is set to use “Smart Definitions” touted as a performance boosting feature that downloads the definitions deemed by Norton to be of most importance in the “real world” scenario, you must turn off Smart Definitions to receive the full Norton virus base definitions on each update .

As well, the default configuration is set to utilize “Intelligent Skip Scanning”, nice oxymoron Norton, to SKIP the scanning of a portion of files by extension and containers, also touted as a performance boosting feature. What is not made easy to discover is that all Windows files and all .dll files are included in this block of files skipped. This is ridiculous with the current number of exploits using legitimate Windows files, especially .dlls, to harvest and collect personal data.

Although virtually no security vendor can offer any detection rating in the real world even close to the testing results done by various security firms using blocks consisting mostly of known malware; Norton 360 is much, much weaker protection than has been touted by the PC magazines and Download sites moderators that basically compare and test 1-how fast/smooth a product installs 2-how quick it scans 3-what is “claims” to protect against: basically NOTHING that helps anyone ascertain the level of protection.

They may as well just read the reviews of other online reviews and summarize…oh wait a minute; there are those that do this as well and then actually name one of the worst performers(install/scan-lol) as their own winner after admitting no research was done except summarizing other reviews. How do they choose a different winner? lol My point is that we need to do our own testing because unfortunately there is very little unbiased opinion in regards.

Norton is by far the best in one category though; it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to remove the product from your machine! Even with the Norton removal tool. In fact the OLD Norton 360 version that was pre-installed on one of my systems actually came back to life-lol-after installing Norton 360 v. 5 during reboot on 3 separate occasions and literally quarantined the newer version of itself! Each time I had to reload the newer version which erases all of the rules learned by the firewall previously.

I recommend the free version of Avira or Avast.
